- Please tell to us the detailed story of the Band: how was the passion for Ethereal born? Why the choice of found a Duo? Where does ‘Nova’ come from?
We don’t know who was born first: the passion for Ethereal or us…Our aim is simply to express – a part the self-imposed bonds of genre – our creativity. The project was born in 1997, working on material already sketchy in the previous years. In Spring 1998 we have released our self-produced first demo tape thanx to a prize won to a musical competition: thanx to 25 hours of free recording in a studio we realized the demo-CD ‘Voli Sferici’, that was out in March 1999. The term ‘Nova’ has 3 reasons: one biographical, one proposal and one programmatic. We chose it starting from Dante’s motto “Incipit Vita Nova”, as we tried to come out from a pretty ‘dark’ period through the help of the Music. Moreover, ‘Nova’ expresses the attempt of propose a formally new style as based on a compositional attitude that results, paradoxically, “naif” and “refined” at the same time. Finally, it is a simple word and recall (phonetically) ‘new wave’ musical genre we appreciate for spirit and attitude.
- Could you please speak about your demo-CD more in deep? And above all about ‘Icaro’, my favourite song.
‘Voli Sferici’ contains songs that were composed between 1994 and 1999. We worked in studio but we avoided to use “sovrarecordings”, vocal effects or guest musicians, as – for the same nature that a demo must poses – we wanted to it to portrait our characteristics of Duo, and our limits. So, it is not a real concept, but the 7 songs are closely bound, as they evoke existential conditions of crisis or change: in general, situations that places people in a conscious state of unstable equilibrium, between shade and light, between reality and dream, between renouncement and choice. The lyric of ‘Icaro’ expresses, in this way, a ‘double bound’, a bond without an exit: the habit to disenchantment (the sky made of metal) from a side and from the other the artificial illusions (the armours made of false wings) that prevent to recover the lost innocence. Due to this we fall down, attracted by a sun that at this point is forbidden.
- ‘Voli Sferici’ (spherical flights)…according to me, the lyrics seem bound to themes of “cyclicity”, to Nature and her Elements…would like to talk more in deep about these themes and reveal what symbol does the mirror (often present in your lyrics) represent?
Actually, the predominant theme of ‘Voli Sferici’ is the cyclicity, in her twofold valency: positive and negative. It is the refuge and the solace, for the seasons that eternally take place again, for the sun that arises every day; but, in the negative sense, it represents the monotony of an existence lived as an infinite labyrinth with no way out. The attempts of ‘escape’ are represented by symbols such as the ‘jump of the acrobat’, the ‘journey to a long distance isle’, the ‘horizon’, the ‘awakening’.
Concerning the Mirror, it is the physic reign of ‘fiction’, it captures the reality and identifies it with the illusion, realizing our wishes under the form of reflected images of what we would really want to be. The image revealed by the Mirror makes us conscious of how difficult is setting us free from the spell of individuality, an individuality built up on deception for the fear of losing ourselves.
- To you the conclusion of this little interview: future projects and what do you expect for a Label interested into your Music?
In the immediate future we will be present on the compilation ‘Intimation of Immortality 5’ by Energeia and on the compilation of the fanzine ‘Rosa Selvaggia’. Moreover, we are arranging the songs for our next CD.
Concerning Labels, the thing worries us most is the music-business (ok, it is ‘underground’ but we know money is money!), that they would impose change to make our music more commercial, instead of improving its quality (we are conscious of our limits). We are closely devoted to our Music: if change, we must change…Social life imposes us roles, it would be nice being FREE at least in Music!!!
