:Dream Into Dust:
Finally in these dark velvet pages the presence of DREAM INTO DUST, the dismal project of Derek Rush,
follow him to the paths of the No Man's Land...

Simona

- 'No Man's Land' MCD and the track 'Somnolent' (from ‘The Cold, The Silent’, Dragon Flight Compilation) are the only (for the moment!) D.I.D. releases I've got in my hands, so I think it is permissible to ask to you to talk about the other releases of your dismal project?
D: After 'no man's land', we released 'a prison for oneself', a 7" and cassette dedicated to the 30th anniversary of THE PRISONER series. This consists of 3 instrumental pieces with similar sounds to that of the series, but with no samples from the soundtrack. Then came 'The world we have lost' CD, which is the fullest realization of our sound and concepts to date.
- Are you working on new material?
D: Since 'The world we have lost' (and a bit before) we've been doing songs for compilations, all exclusive with special themes. These include "Stormbringer" on 'Presumed guilty' [MISANTHROPY], "Totestadt" on ‘What is eternal' [MIDDLE PILLAR], "The dread world born in sleep" on SOL#3 [TURSA], "The chariot" on 'Major Arcana of theTarot' [PALACE OF WORMS], and "Out of chaos stars are born" for 'On the brink of infinity' on our own CHTHONIC STREAMS label. There are a few more of those to do, then there will probably be a special 10" release.
- As we know, Chthonic Streams was born for produce the material of your main band and related projects, will it be the same now that Misanthropy/Elfenblut records are dead?
D: Actually, ELFENBLUT was already supposed to release our first CD before CS came into being, but could not at the time we were ready due to scheduling conflicts. we were allowed to release minor projects on CS that they chose not to be a part of. this may or may not continue, depending on what sort of agreement will occur regarding DREAM INTO DUST and another label or distributor. related projects and those of interest to us will still come out on CS, although sometimes other labels are involved. for example the industrial/experimetal side-project OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN was released by SUFFERING CLOWN through WORLD SERPEDNT, and the darkambient/neoclassical/electronic project A MURDER OF ANGELS came out on MIDDLE PILLAR.
- I read that 'A Prison for Oneself' album was inspired by an English TV series called ‘The Prisoner’. Ok, I must admit I don't know anything about that and I'd like to know more: not about the plot but about the visions of society the prisoners talk about.
D: The vision of society expressed on 'A prison for oneself' is really a combination of very clear ideas expressed in the series that i personally related to very strongly. Trapped in a seemingly pleasant world with an undercurrent of unseen control; a preference for wearing black and a refusal to "fit in"; a restless, constant searching for avenues of escape; a dislike for giving in, even when the enemy has the advantage; the struggle of the individual against the collective; aversion to becoming part of a faceless, numbered society.
- AH, this society of clones, masses that follow any wave, empty bodies singing stupid songs like 'happy, everybody should be happy' Better suffering and being conscious than be a part of them! What about you?
D: That about sums up my feelings on that subject!
- And how is living in an enormous city like New York?
D: New York is good for us because of the accessibility of music stores, the high energy and the fact that many places are open late. but it's not so great because of the traffic congestion, the poor air quality, and people in your way all the time, among other things. but it's where we are for now.
- What's your vision of individualism?
D: Doing what you want regardless of how it's looked upon by others. This includes choosing to completely ignore whether something is a "trend" or not - those who claim to be "anti-trend" and refuse to enjoy something merely for this reason are cutting themselves off from experiences. Example: PORTISHEAD are a big-selling group, but their music is brilliant. To refuse to listen to them because they are perceived as pop or trendy is as closed-minded as those who ignore the Underground. (your words are simply GREAT!! ed.)
- Ah Ah, a typical question of this period: what do you expect for the new Millennium?
D: Things will stay the same unless people decide to change. Mostly they change the surface if anything at all.
- Several ways of performing and torturing instruments, and several ways of performing and torturing voice; an artificial instrument combined with a natural instrument in an intricate web of suffering. Which of these two instruments do you prefer to perform?
D: I much prefer composing and playing to singing, but as they are my words I still prefer to sing them. I try to write vocal lines that will be interesting and enjoyable to sing, if not then just speaking them is sufficient or leaving it instrumental if necessary. Often I find instrumentals are harder to hold most people's attention, as they are fixated on the human voice. I don't look on my voice as the center of a piece, it's only another instrument and a vehicle for the expression of concepts through lyrics that add another layer. Actually, we have recorded a piece called "At the Heart of the White Rose" for a STATE-ART compilation that uses the words of Bertolt Brecht, and others were called upon to do the vocals instead.
- I'd like to talk a bit about your 'visual Art' (as graphic designer); being a graphic myself too, I've been often criticised as I consider graphic and multimedia part of the Art nowadays, as I see Art as THE way of expressing feelings and emotions - your opinion please?
D: Overall I agree that the general heading of all these expressions is 'Art', but underneath that you have visuals, music, theatre, etc. It's more and more multimedia these days, which can be good as long as all the elements are good and work together well. If not, it can come off as a mess, with some media better left alone if they aren't done properly.
- Express emotions (this obviously goes for Music) and in the case of D.I.D. of expressing Pain. In this way you mean 'Music exorcised by Derek Rush'?
D: I am even more unhappy when not making music. It allows me to expel certain feelings that would otherwise be harmful to myself and others. This should not be taken too literally - I don't write songs about killing people instead of killing people or something like that. I mean that I am driven by a need to create, and I am unhappy if it's not satisfied. it is also a way to concentrate on something positive (i.e. the creative process) rather than the negative forces that churn in our heads. Even if the piece seems to be negative it is a positive act in bringing it to light so it can be dealt with. I would say even if a song makes you feel worse, it may force you to reflect on why that is, or to bring your negative emotions to a climax rather than letting them seethe under the surface, which is unhealthy.
- That's all and as a icy mist announces to us the forthcoming Night, I leave your Soul free to express your last thoughts.
D: Thank you for the questions. everyone should find their own answers.
